The writer and feminist Ariel Levy refers to her as a “sex doll” in the book Female Chauvinist Pigs: Women and the Rise of Launch Culture, and in interviews on the Lilli-inspired Barbie doll, the playwright and feminist Eve Ensler refers to Lilli as a “sex toy.” Additionally, a German brochure from the 1950s states that Lilli was “always discreet” and that her wardrobe made her “the star of every bar.”

Lilli was a German cartoon character created by Reinhard Beuthien for the German tabloid Bild. In 1953, the newspaper decided to market a Lilli doll and contacted Max Weissbrodt of the toy company O&M Hausser in Neustadt bei Coburg.
On a side note: the Bild Lilli Doll marketed in Germany during the mid 50s is known to have been the precursor to Mattel's Barbie. The long-standing rumor that Barbie was based on a "German sex toy" is a misrepresentation; although Bild Lilli was sold in joke shops and tobacco stores, she was initially designed as a novelty item, similar to the kewpies found in sideshow alley.
